Cubs Missing Steve Clevenger

Hot-hitting Steve Clevenger, off to a 11-for-22 start at the plate, was on the brink of becoming Dale Sveum’s everyday catcher before suffering tightness in his right side.

The injury forced Clevenger to the 15-day DL on April 30, which doesn’t expire until next Tuesday.

But even from the training table Clevenger appears to have the upper hand on Geovany Soto, whose season-long slump has dropped his batting average to .152, ranking 29th among major league back stoppers.

Why Ryan Dempster Is Winless

Why is it the Cubs don’t score runs behind Ryan Dempster?

You’d think a guy who’s posted 1,2,0,1 & 1 earned runs in five outings would take pressure off the lineup. Instead, the Cubs have scored a grand total of five runs for Dempster. Five runs!

Run support continues to be an ongoing problem for Dempster and largely explains why he’s winless over his last 14 starts dating back to August of last year.

Fog Lifting Over Surging Cubs

Cubs win 5-1 vs. Braves Monday night. That’s 3 wins in the last 4 games.

Since starting (3-11), the Cubs have won series against St. Louis & L.A., and split series vs. Philly & Cincinnati.

The Cardinals lead the Central division. The Reds are second. Los Angeles has the best record in the National League and the Braves lost for just the 8th time in the past 26 games.

What does it all mean? It means our woeful Cubbies are competitive, and may have a shot at reaching the .500 mark by June. Who would’ve thunk it?
